THE FIRE CHIEF PLAYS IT SAFE

It was Valentine’s Day in the afternoon. As snow started to fall, Giggle ran to the window in the bell tower.

“What are you doing, Giggle?” asked her Papa. “Waiting for Gusty,” she told him. Gusty was a six-year-old wind from the North Pole, and Giggle’s Mama had asked his Mama if he could stay the night. “The snow is sticking, Papa,” she called.

“Are all your cousins coming to the party?” he asked. Giggle had so many cousins that they called themselves the Cousin Club. “YES!” shouted Giggle. “I want them all to meet Gusty.”

“I can see them now,” said her Mama. She was looking over Giggle’s head. Long lines of young ghosts were coming through the snow to the tower. They looked like a parade of white sheets. “Everybody’s here. Your aunt Cecily even sent the twins,” she smiled. The twins were the littlest ghosts, five-year-old Ashley and Jeremy.

As the Cousin Club was flowing up the tower steps, Giggle saw Gusty blowing in. “He’s here,” she called. Outside the window, Gusty huffed and puffed himself around. He was so excited about meeting Giggle’s cousins.

“Hi, Gusty! Do you want to stay out there or come in?” asked Giggle.

“Stay out,” said Gusty shyly. He felt a little funny about being cooped up. “OK,” said Giggle. As the cousins came through the doorway, she dragged each one over to meet Gusty. The last ones were the twins. They gave Gusty big smiles.

Gusty’s own smile got bigger and bigger. He loved being the center of attention.

Giggle announced to Gusty, “We’re going into the church to toast marshmallows. That’s what we do on Valentine’s Day. You just wait here. I’ll bring you yours.”

As she dashed off, Giggle’s parents looked out at the street. They saw Father Boyle trudging away with a suitcase. “He’s going to spend the night with his brother,” said Mrs. Ghost, “and it’s time we left too.”

Giggle’s Mama and Papa always had a romantic dinner out on Valentine’s Day.

“Be good now,” called Mr. and Mrs. Ghost, patting Ashley and Jeremy on the head. “We’ll be back before bedtime.” They went off, hand in hand.
